Karunavira studied at London University, Goldsmiths College before starting a career in primary education. In 1985 Karunavira resigned as head teacher in order to pursue ordination into the Triratna Buddhist Order (1989). Since then he has been teaching meditation and Buddhist Studies at the Brighton Buddhist Centre, becoming its spiritual director between 2000 and 2009. Since 2005 Karunavira has taught MBCT within the local community, gaining his masters (M.Sc.) in Mindfulness-based Approaches at Bangor University. In 2010 Karunavira gained a Fd.Sc. in Person-centred Counselling and work part-time for the local NHS with parents of children who have newly diagnosed complex needs. Karunavira has particular experience using mindfulness-based approaches with Carers, teenagers and Older People. Karunavira is currently training mindfulness teachers for the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust.
