Mindfulness Network CIC - Our Supervisors

Nick Diggins

Nick Diggins

I have been a mindfulness teacher since 2006 and teach extensively in various non-clinical community-based settings, in addition to running mindfulness workshops for of voluntary sector organisations, private companies and for the local council. As well as being an Associate Teacher for the Mindfulness Network CIC (delivering the Mindfulness Distance Learning course), I am also an Associate Teacher for Mindful Health – a non-profit organisation which works in collaboration with Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to deliver mindfulness teacher-training in Brighton.

Qualifications

  • MA in Teaching Mindfulness-based Courses (Distinction), Bangor University

  • Certificate of Competence to Teach Mindfulness-based Courses, Bangor University

  • Intermediate Certificate in Counselling Skills

Teaching-Training Specialisms

I have established my own busy private mindfulness teaching practice in Sussex, primarily teaching MBSR and non-clinical MBCT to the general public and I have substantial experience of setting up and running my own business as an independent mindfulness teacher. In addition to the skills and expertise required to deliver the courses themselves, this has required a range of other competencies such as: promotion, marketing, administration, bookkeeping, web design and understanding the legalities involved with advertising.

Having recovered from 17 years of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) I also have extensive experience of using mindfulness to help manage pain and illness and have taught MBCT for people with CFS.

I also have considerable experience teaching mindfulness to carers. For example, I have run both regular drop-in meditation classes for carers (for a six year period) and also many one-off workshops aimed at providing them with basic mindfulness skills to help manage the extreme stress that their caring roles can entail.

Supervision Experience

I have provided mindfulness supervision since 2014 and have experience of working with supervisees who are currently in training and also with those who are established teachers, both independently or in NHS settings.

Supervision Specialisms

I have extensive experience of running independent mindfulness courses, classes and workshops for the general public and for local businesses. I can offer supervision guidance regarding establishing a private mindfulness practice with regard to the following areas:

  • Managing a website and mailing list

  • Marketing

  • Adapting MBCT and MBSR for general population groups

  • Publicity

  • Advertising artwork

  • Legalities of advertising copy

  • Running events for businesses

  • Taster sessions for the general public

Personal Practice

I have more than twenty years experience of regular mindfulness meditation practice and have been a practising Buddhist throughout that time. I also have  a keen interest in other contemplative teachings, including the works of teachers whom Jon Kabat-Zinn has acknowledged were a significant influentience on MBSR: Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj and Jiddu Krishnamurti.

Research Activities and Interests

I have a keen interest in the differences and similarities between mindfulness teachings, both secular and Buddhist, and other contemplative paths which have influenced MBSR (see above), but which function in a very different way, such as Advaita Vedanta.
